If you are frustrated with the way the Media negatively depicts the salmon farming industry in BC, here are some effective ways you can promote our environmentally sustainable industry to the public and government.
1) Write a Letter to the Editor of your local and national newspaper or your favourite publication (magazine/trade journal/newsletter etc.)
Key tips for writing a ‘Letter to the Editor’
- Focus on one issue or topic and keep your letter brief
(maximum 200 words). - Send your letter in quickly to improve its chances to be printed
(within 1-2 days). - Be diplomatic and polite.
- Ensure all of your information is factual! Ask your supervisor to check it for you.
- If applicable, cite scientific sources.
- Include full contact info.
(Publications will notify you if they are going to print your letter).
Politicians read these letters in order to gain insight into public opinion. Generally, politicians consider the ideas expressed to them in a letter to be representative of up to 1000 voters! Writing letters is a very powerful way for you to share with your community and the government the facts about fish farming and aquaculture. The 'Letters to the Editor' is often the most read section in any publication.
