Salmon farming - and most particularly its environmental implications - have been extensively studied in British Columbia and many other parts of the world. Below are links and information for some of the most recent and significant information relating to our industry:

Fish Health Database: Cohen Commission Release

Please note: These are not all records included in the release - but make up the largest portion of the database information. Check back here for updates.

Fish health events, 2002-2010 - Fish health events include any incident where a veterinarian or treatment is involved in the care of a fish: they are not mortality totals. For example, this document will include all sea lice treatments which do not harm salmon.

DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES AND OCEANS INFORMATION

Atlantic Egg Imports: In early 2011, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans posted a table reportedly providing a  record by year of the maximum amount of Atlantic salmon authorized for import by the BC salmon aquaculture industry. The posting of this information is part of DFO's increased effort to share information with the public regarding aquaculture operations since they undertook the Pacific Aquaculture Regulations in December 2010. We agree that having a central location for information from our government regulators is a good initiative. but feel it is important for context to be provided for this information.

  • A large, natural infection of sea lice on juvenile Pacific salmon in the Gulf Islands area of British Columbia, Canada
High levels of sea lice generally exceeding a prevalence of 60% were found on all species of juvenile Pacific salmon and on juvenile Pacific herring in the Gulf Islands area within the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia. Virtually all sea lice were Caligus clemensi and most stages were maturing or mature. There are no active fish farms in this area, indicating that this is a naturally occurring epizootic of sea lice. It is possible that the infection was associated with Pacific herring that spawned in the area in the spring, although the linkage between the spawning Pacific herring and the infection on Pacific salmon was not determined.
