Sea Lice – It's Effect on the BC Environment on Salmon Farms

Although it is known that sea lice are a problem in Europe, there remain questions about whether this naturally occurring parasite is adversely affecting wild salmon in British Columbia. In this video clip, Dr. Kevin Butterworth - who works under the direction of Dr. R. Scott McKinley head of the UBC Centre for Aquaculture and the Environment - describes the research now underway to assess the B.C. situation: Is there a transfer of sea lice from farmed fish to wild salmon in BC? How many sea lice are detrimental to the health of the fish? And is there an effect on the BC environment from sea lice found on salmon farms? The UBC Centre for Aquaculture and the Environment has research studies underway in British Columbia, eastern Canada and Europe.
