PARTNERSHIPS THE CORNERSTONE OF SUSTAINABLE SALMON FARMING

August 26, 2008

The dialogues and relationships that BC salmon farmers have with coastal communities and other stakeholders are important to the long term sustainability of the industry.

One of the association's producer members, Marine Harvest Canada, highlights its partnerships with First Nations in ads and articles published this week. Marine Harvest describes these relationships as the cornerstone of its business stating that "These relationships must be based upon respect for aboriginal history and culture and must recognize important modern day economic, social and environmental interests." The value of these relationships is best described by Percy Starr of the Kitasoo/Xai'xais First Nation, who states "The relationship with Marine Harvest has been beautiful for the Kitasoo people."
