This 30 minute video features Mary Ellen Walling, Executive Director, BC Salmon Farmers Association in conversation with journalist Dan McLennan speaking on a wide range of topics from recent changes in the industry to opportunities in the global marketplace.
Although it is known that sea lice are a problem in Europe, there remain questions about whether this naturally occurring parasite is adversely affecting wild salmon in British Columbia. In this video clip, Dr. Kevin Butterworth - who works under the direction of Dr. R. Scott McKinley head of the UBC Centre for Aquaculture and the Environment - describes the research now underway to assess the B.C.situation: Is there a transfer of sea lice from farmed fish to wild salmon in BC? How many sea lice are detrimental to the health of the fish? And is there an effect on the BC environment from sea lice found on salmon farms? The UBC Centre for Aquaculture and the Environment has research studies underway in British Columbia, eastern Canada and Europe.

Salmon Aquaculture - A Growing Industry
We invite you to take our virtual tour of the cycle of salmon farming. It starts with the selection of brood stock, moves to the hatchery, then to the farm site, and finally through the harvest phase and onto the processing plant and markets. The strictest of health and environmental standards apply at each step along the way.
