HOT TOPIC: Trying to Make Sense of it All

In an article published in 'Kamloops This Week', columnist Tom Fletcher provides a refreshing view on this year's record Pink salmon returns and Fraser River sockeye crisis.

Mr. Fletcher provides a brief history of the BC Pacific Salmon Forum which concluded earlier this year and states "One of its key findings was that sea lice can be managed to protect wild stocks, as the BC government has also demonstrated for some time." He goes on to say, "Land farms, not fish farms, along with subdivisions, roads, logging sites and industry, have made sewers out of too many streams." Mr. Fletcher suggests that the recent appearance of Humboldt squid on Tofino's beaches is indication of "a profound shift in ocean currents and conditions where the sockeye are disappearing."
