Types of Jobs

Many specialized positions exist within the salmon farming sector with responsibilities relating to fish health, sales and marketing, and administration and management. The day-to-day operation of hatcheries, farm sites and processing plants also creates a wide variety of other employment opportunities.

Hatcheries
Working at a hatchery involves tending and ensuring the health of salmon during the earliest stages of their development. A love of the outdoors and an interest in animal care are common characteristics of people who work at both hatcheries and farm sites.

Typical Tasks:Skills & Aptitudes:
Cleaning tanks, screens, etc.Moderate physical strength
DisinfectingMathematical skills
Picking eggsBasic knowledge of fish
Feeding fishDriving trucks/vehicles
Transferring fishPlumbing, carpentry, electrical, welding skills
Grading/vaccinating fishKnowledge of hatchery operations
Monitoring water qualityOrganizational skills
Operating light equipmentAbility to follow instructions
Regular maintenanceAbility to do repetitive work

Farm Sites
Farm sites are sea-based, although close to shore, and are where fish are raised to the desired size to take to market. Farm technicians are responsible for the day-to-day onsite caring of the fish. On more isolated farms, rotating crews will typically travel in by boat and live in comfortable on-farm facilities.

Operate small equipmentOrganizational skills
Work in all weather, isolated locations

Processing Plants
Processing plants are industrial facilities where freshly harvested fish are prepared for sale either as raw fish or in various value-added product forms. Workers are assigned to various stages of the production process. Specific individuals are also responsible for ensuring the plant meets all government standards. In addition, many plants now do secondary processing, including filleting, steaking, smoking, canning and specialty packaging.
